As an Ophthalmologist specializing in Cornea in the Bronx, I see patients who come with a red and painful eye. Often times, I notice a scratch in the front layer of the cornea which is called a corneal abrasion. Definition:

Corneal abrasion is a scratch to the front part of the eye or medically it is a break in the superficial epithelium.

Signs:

Because the eye has a tremendous amount of nerves this can often be a painful condition. Signs include eye pain, redness in eyes, and light sensitivity. Assessing:

As an Ophthalmologist in the bronx, we have a few techniques we can use to help diagnose the condition. The first is looking under the slit lamp with a special drop called fluorescein. This drop will stain the irregularity and help us measure the degree of abrasion. We also do a full exam to make sure no other part of the eye is affected.

Treatment:

Patient usually will heal within 24-48 hours depending on the level of abrasion. Antibiotic drops are prescribed to prevent any infection and the patient is monitored closely to make sure it heals. It is common for pain to continue though start subsiding in the first 24-48 hours. In most cases, the abrasion heals and the patient can resume normal activity. Patient should not wear contact lens during this time as this can increase the risk of infections.
